Start a Garden! It’s not too late!

Yeah!!  My husband finally had time to haul black dirt to the garden to build it up a bit, so yesterday I found this great nursery in Hinkley (met my sister there to take my kids for the week) that had its ‘end of the season’ sale.  I came back with a couple of incredible hanging baskets (50% off), strawberry plants, and a flat of vegetables.  The vegetables were my biggest deal: I only had to pay $1.00 for as many vegetables as I could fit on a flat that was provided (and it was a decent sized one).  We now have a garden full of cucumbers, squash, watermelon, kale (Abby’s request for her guinea pigs?!?!?!), cabbage (for sauerkraut this fall?!?!?), onions, etc.  When I pick the girls up on Friday, I may see if they have anything else left.  There were tons of tomato plants – I may have to learn how to can them!

Don’t forget to hit the plant stands that are still open.  Even if you don’t have a garden, plant some tomatoes and peppers (or whatever else) in pots for a potted garden . . . inexpensive, fresh produce later this summer that is much better than the store!
